California Cleantech OpenThe Alumni Program maintains relationships with all past CTO Semi-Finalists, with the goal of creating a community that fosters connection, innovation and business acceleration.
Team Leader: Alumni Chair
Area: Events
Time Needed: 8-10 hours per Month
Overview
Coordinate Alumni and CTO activities to ensure that the opportunities for alumni to participate in internal and external events are maximized. Work with events, PR, and marketing chairs to understand upcoming events and opportunities and communicate them to the alumni newsletter publisher. Work with Alumni SIG and workshop leaders to ensure that all Alumni specific activities are added to the CTO calendar.
Essential Functions- Identify external events that are appropriate venues for alumni to participate in

Team Leader: Alumni Chair
Area: Quarterly Newsletter
Time Needed: 6-8 hours per Quarter
Overview
Work with the writers, alumni directory publisher, CTO marketing and PR team to assemble and publish a quarterly newsletter with content appropriate and interesting to the Alumni audience. Update with CTO news, Alumni successes and metrics, events and other news of note.
Essential Functions- Develop a standard project plan for quarterly newsletter assembly and production, and execute
- Design and build a quarterly newsletter template
- Solicit information from alumni team, marketing, PR for content
- Incorporate designs, logos, layouts, as appropriate and/or dictated by CTO marketing team

Team Leader: Directory Publisher

Overview
Work with Alumni directory team to solicit information from alumni and ensure that database profiles are updated regularly. Develop incentives, contests, etc, to encourage participation and create a sense of community. Perform outreach by phone or email as required to ensure that information is current prior to quarterly directory update.

Overview
Work with the CTO system administrator to maintain the existing alumni database, including soliciting updates from the alumni, scrubbing data as required, writing up new feature requests, and managing the implementation of search and social networking features as they become available. Develop reports to capture appropriate metrics and provide information to writers, and database publisher in support of the Alumni Directory publication.

As the Federal Stimulus dollars targeted for Green Jobs start flowing, we expect a high level of Grant activity for start-ups in the Clean Tech Open community.
We are looking for experienced writers who want to volunteer their time to help CTO Alumni companies apply for grants. If you have good technical writing skills and want to contribute to the success of an early stage company, consider starting in a volunteer role.

Overview
The Clean Tech industry will benefit from billions in Federal Stimulus funding distributed in the form of Grants and Government Bids. For many of our CTO Alumni companies, this will be the first time that they apply for a grant or submit an RFP response.
We are currently building a directory of professional contract writers who have the experience to guide our CTO entrepreneurs through the grant/bid process. If you are an experienced grant writer, tell us about your qualifications and availability.
- Lead the development process of grant or bid package

Area: Mentor Program
Time Needed: 10-12 hours per Month
Overview
Manage the mentor program for CTO Alumni. Working closely with the mentor chair and existing mentor program, create and implement a year-round mentoring program that focuses on alumni business needs and provides temporary support for specific issues. The program will be participant driven.
Essential Functions- Identify alumni needs for coaching and mentoring.
- Identify appropriate mentors and skills, and developing a matching system that allows alumni and mentors to meet and qualify one another.

Overview
Work with the Alumni chair to plan and execute the mission and activities of the CTO Alumni program. The mission of the program is to create a community for past contestants of the CTO business plan competition that will foster innovation, connection and communication, and will help the alumni companies to continue to build business momentum. The role of the second chair includes involvement in the five 2009 project areas: Alumni database and directory, education and networking, quarterly newsletter, alumni mentor program, and events.

Angels
California Cleantech OpenThe Angel Investor Program is chartered to engage the Angel Investor community as active participants in the CTO, to increase the rate of Angel funding for CTO contestants. This team will recruit Angel investors, enage them with our community, and match investors to companies.
Team Leader: Angel Investor Engagement Chair
Time Needed: 5 hours per Week
Overview
Manage outreach to the Silicon Valley Angel Investor community, to engage individuals to become involved in the CTO via outbound communications, a email campaign, guerilla/grassroots networking, etc. Get the Angel community excited about a variety of means of participation: mentoring, giving us access to their networks, advice on pitches, participation in our new “Angel Investor Forum”, bringing raw/unproven deal flow into CTO as competition entrants (spring), first access to CTO Finalists as Angel investment deal flow (fall), etc.
Essential Functions• Develop and execute a messaging and communications plan
• With the Angel Chair, set goals for number and timing of Angels recruited into our program. Drive and measure the results.
• Drive sign-up of Angels for our “Angel Investor Forum” (to be run coincident with CTO Mock Judging), and get commitments for Angels to play specific roles within that event.
• Act as go-between for matchmaking between CTO finalists and appropriate prospective Angel investors. (And/or, help facilitate a mechanized process for matchmaking.)
• Develop a feedback mechanism to assure that Angels who engage with us are pleased with our program, are seeing results, and that we are hearing their inputs.
• Passionate team player, who thrives within a small, focused group
• Business expertise and understanding of startups (ideally, startup experience). Appropriate experience would likely include Marketing, Sales or Business Development.
• Ideally: understanding of the Venture and Angel funding ecosystem and deal screening processes

Overview
This person will build the processes and infrastructure in support of our goal of engaging the Angel Investor community as active participants in the CTO: mentoring, giving us access to their networks, advice on pitches, participation in our new “Angel Investor Forum”, bringing raw/unproven deal flow into CTO as competition entrants (spring), first access to CTO Finalists as Angel investment deal flow (fall), etc.
Essential Functions• In conjunction with the Chair, develop and maintain a master project schedule for the Angel program.
• Establish our Angel investor database, and means for sharing it among appropriate CTO individuals. (Perhaps something like Google Docs.) Develop the process for occasional email communication to the Angel community as fed by the database.
• Develop matchmaking process(es) to enable CTO finalist to tap into the Angel community for advice during the competition and most importantly, to tap the Angel community for potential investments at the end of the season.
• Orchestrate the mechanics and logistics of the Angel Investor Forum event. Provide a feedback mechanism after the event, to enable the contestants to learn from the feedback of the Angel participants.

Outreach includes universities, labs, personal networks, grass roots publicity, existing business plan competitions, green events and conventions and Alumni support.

California Cleantech Open, Rocky Mountain Cleantech OpenThe Judging team is in charge of managing the selection process of Semi-Finalists, Finalists and Winners. This team recruits Judges, designs the process and the evaluation criteria, and runs the logistics of the judging sessions for all rounds.

Overview
The Judging team recruits and selects judges for all three rounds of judging. The team members act as scribes during the judges and also mamke final decisions on difficult judging decisions. The Co-Chair position has a cyclical cycle, with much volunteer time needed at the beginning of June, at the end of September and the beginning of October, and again at the end of October.
Essential Functions- Work with the other Co-Chair to oversee the Judging team and all Judges

Coordinate the A/V requirements with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati prior to and during Summer Seminars, including the conference room PowerPoint, microphone(s), monitors, video recording, podcasting, etc. Also includes Webex connection, monitoring, and real-time communications with remote participants.
Essential Functions- Transfer speaker presentations to WSGR laptop
- Setup Webex connection for remote participants
- Monitor remote participant communication (Webex) for questions for speaker
- Coordinate with WSGR for room A/V needs (microphone, projector, etc.)
- Record and monitor podcasts
- Help manage audience at program start and after break
- Take pictures

California Cleantech Open, Rocky Mountain Cleantech OpenThe Sustainability program of the Clean Tech Open works to embed sustainable practices in the competition by providing resources and tools for competitors and by adopting sustainability practices for Clean Tech Open's operations and events.
Team Leader: Sustainability Starter Kit lead

Time Needed: 10 hours per Quarter
Overview
The Sustainability Starer Kit is a wonderful "goodie bag" of resources for the Semifinalists. Drawn from a myriad of donations, sponsor gifts, discounted resouces, and pooled knowledge, the kit contains many items and services that the Semifinalist teams need to enable their companies to work and stay sustainable.
Essential Functions- Work with the team lead to research and gather resources
- Build the kits (one afternoon once all the items are gathered)
- Hand out the kits to the teams (two Seminar evenings)
- Interest in sustainability
- Creative ideas for sustainable products and services
- Ability to work well with a team
- Available to help build and hand out kits
Team Leader: Sustanability
Area: Events
Time Needed: 5 hours per Week
Overview
With so many Clean Tech Open events, there is a big opportunity to "green" most of them. Work with the Events team to ensure that transportation, food, waste and programming are all sustainable. Build out a team to carry through all physical aspects.
Essential Functions- Work towards a goal of zero-waste events
- Oversee a team to identify and secure options for sustainable transportation, catering, waste and recycling options, offsets for event guests, etc.
- Maintain documentation of sustainable practices
- Participate in marketing and PR of events from a sustainability perspective
- Write blog posting for CTO blog regarding sustainable event practices
- High interest in sustainability
- Some event experience
- Ability to manage a team
- Basic knowledge of sustainable event options
Team Leader: Sustainable Event Coordinator
Area: Sustainability
Time Needed: 2 hours per Week
Overview
Making events sustainable is an important aspect of building up the Sustainability program. By helping out at events, the Sustainable Events team can offer event guests can many options to participate in events in a completely sustainable manner.
Essential Functions- Work under Sustainabile Events Coordinator
- Identify sustainable caterers
- Ensure proper trash and recylce recepticles at all events
- Identify and secure public transportation or carpooling options for all events
- Research carbon offsets for transportation and event waste
- Oversee footprint of individual events
- Work with WebEx to webinar all events
- Evaluate events for other ways to set a sustainable example
- Interest in sustainability
- Available to consistently help out at many events
Team Leader: Website Resources Lead
Area: Sustainability
Time Needed: 8 hours per Month
Overview
The Sustainability portion of the website is due for an overhaul. With a great team of researchers, writers and implementors, this section can be a great resources for the contestants and Alumni, and the public will visit as well.
Essential Functions- Search out the best resources for calculators, suggestions, methods, services, etc. for start-ups
- Maintain up-to-date content
- High interest in sustainability and sustainable resources
- Ability to work with a team
- Ability to gather and synthesize information and resources

Volunteer Program
California Cleantech Open, Pacific Northwest Cleantech Open, Rocky Mountain Cleantech OpenThe Volunteer program looks to recruit interested volunteers for Clean Tech Open events and outreach points. Our Volunteers are critical in fulfilling the needs of both the national and regional Clean Tech Open programs and help sustain the organizations ongoing mission of a cleaner tomorrow through technology.
Time Needed: Varies hours per Month
Overview The Pacific Northwest Clean Tech Open Committee is looking for enthusiastic, interested volunteers to help at a number of upcoming events. The Events are all held in the Greater Boise area and will run from a few hours to half days. Volunteers will be asked to do a myriad of projects such as registration, set -up and tear-down of event locations, follow-up calls to contestants, mentors, judges, and a few things I am sure we have failed to mention.
